Guitar as a Solo Instrument

Playing guitar in a band is cool, but guitar is also a great solo instrument!

Classical music, often times, is not the first sort of music people think of when they hear the guitar. However, Classical Guitar is a great solo instrument! People have been playing Classical Guitar for the past 300 years (that's a very long time) compared to the 80 years of electric guitar. Some great Classical  Guitarists and Composers are Mauro Guiliani, Fernando Sor, Andres Segovia, Roland Dyens, and Leo Brouwer.

There are many jazz guitarists who are famous for their solo guitar playing, perhaps most famous of all is Joe Pass. There are many great guitarists in Chicago who perform solo guitar, such as Andy Brown, Frank Portolese, and Dan Effland.

If you don't like classical or jazz, there are people who play solo pop guitar! Perhaps the most famous of these people is Tommy Emmanuel, who has covered songs by the Beatles and other pop musicians.

It's a very fun and rewarding way to play guitar!
